I am also looking for missing but important info on this same topic. I have watched or read through perhaps a dozen or more tutorials that tell how to make the skin textures, but I cannot figure out how to turn the uploaded skin textures into a usable "skin". What are these elusive, secret or ommitted last steps that all of the tutorials seem to be missing?

PS. Yes, I did select "Upload as skin" in the upload options, it still saves as just textures, not usable skin.

Alexandri,

After you have uploaded your Lowerbody, Upperbody and Head skin texture files into SL.

1) Create a folder in your inventory for your skins.
2) Right Click the folder and right Click -> New Bodyparts -> New Skin
3) Name your new skin appropriately.
4) Put it on, go into edit mode, and select the SKin tab.
5) change the Tattoo Images to your skin images.
6) Save and Close.

If you are creating celebrity based skins you may want to check that you have the right to do so. Using their image or their name to endorse a product could land you in a lot of hot water. Not to mention if you use photography that you do not have the rights to either. The only person I know of that has had the right to create celebrity skins is Sachi Vixen - and she was contacted by studio's and agencies directly to do so. I would be very careful if I were you.

You might be able to get around it by saying your skins are "like" so & so but that is even a stretch. I would consult an attorney before going further. The copyright problems and content problems in SL are very HOT right now and I wouldn't want to see someone who is just starting out get banned because they just didn't know the law.

I was only looking for the information on how to upload my own custom creations and make them usable (Thanks Fianna Idora!)

Personally, I think celebrity skins are largely overated. Who would want to pay twice the price of a really good original skin, just to have another ____ ____ in the world (as if we needed more than one).

Here, we have a virtual world in which to express creativity and originality, why waste it on reproductions and trying to all be the same?

Hello. I do not think you will find such a tutorial out there. I spent alot of time searching and searching myself. The most helpful information I have found is all pieced in small threads in these forums. Also some background in image manipulation is a huge part of it, I would say about 70% — at least in my case. My advice is to experiment as much as you can. What works for me, may not work for you. I do think every Skin designer has their own way about each step...and their are many , many steps, which may be one HUGE reason you can not find a complete tutorial. Each skin I have made, was not made the same way as the previous. I would say in my case...I am a trial and error learner, and I love long challenging projects. A big helpful experiment tool, or testing tool I have found is Photoshop CS3's 3D tool. I can see the 3D avatar..and do rough paints, or image manipulation on layers with the overlapping UV map..to see what the hell is going on. This is a lot of help. You may want to look closely at (Another Skin)'s PSD's that she has made available for download. After looking at how she puts together the layers in Photoshop..you might gain some insight. You will need to search for (Another Skin)..read the creators Profile...I think there she has a link to download her PSD files. Good luck, don't give up. and if you have any questions feel free to contact me in world.
