First thing would be to take a look at the stickies at the top of this forum section. Then you might decide to look into some image editing programs that are suitable what is required to make textures that can be used in SL. Some are Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Paint.NET, and the one I use, GIMP. All will require some dedication to learning how to effectively use the software.......you must learn a few concepts that many may not be aware of such as layers, channels, image formats, and image sizes required for uploading. All that is explained in the stickies.
Once you've decided on the software you want to try you can search the internet for tutorials........even You Tube has some very good tutorials. You might check your library for books and, of course, book stores (both brick and mortar and online). Photoshop is the most well known and considered the "bible" for image editing but it's also one of the most expensive............Paint Shop Pro is quite a bit less expensive. Paint.NET and GIMP are both free. If you are like me and cannot afford Photoshop but want power comparable to PS then GIMP would be a good choice. There are lots of books on the software and the GIMP site has links to many tutorials.
Don't expect to be great at it right off the bat if you don't have experience with the higher end imaging software.........but, it's not that hard. If fact it's quite fun to learn.
