2 different shirt sleeves possible?

I'm sorta new to making clothing-have done some basic stuff but am trying to get a bit more creative.

This morning I did a quick sketch and am curious...Is there a way to make the sleeves different on the same shirt? I want to have an insert on the upper part of one sleeve and NOT on the other...One sleeve needs to be solid.

I'm only using PS CS 3...I do not know nor have the desire to learn some 3-D programme which I fear is what this probably needs to be done in?

Unfortunately both arms on any texture are just mirror images. The only way to achieve what you want is to make the insert a prim attachment for the upper arm.

Or you could make the shirt with only one arm and put the different arm on another layer such as jacket or undershirt.

But that's just mad.

That doesn't work either. Both layers would also have two mirrored sleeves, and the uppermost layer will just cover up the layer under it.

Thank you for the replies :) Not really a big problem...I can just re-design the sleeves-they just won't be as funky.

Ephraim Kappler roars laughing: you're right, now that I think about it. Thanks for correcting me, Betty.

Yeah, you really only have a right arm, and the left arm, and any clothing for the left arm that is not prims, will always be an exact mirror image of the right.

Makes it a real pit for tattoo artists. They can't put a tattoo on one arm without putting its mirror image on the other. Fine if it is a heart and the word "MOM", but if the heart says "CANDY" under it on the right side, it will say "YDNAC", with the letters backwards, on the other arm!

Also a problem if you want any sort of writing on clothing sleeves. Forget about "Racing jackets" with a string of text down the arm of the jacket, or anything with logos and patches on the sleves.

This is a real limitation! There should be ways to mask it or something. I never gave lettering a thought-thanks for the pre-warning so when the idea to do this hits me, I won't bash my head against the wall trying to figure out a way to mask it off the left arm.

I should look into building class for prims. Those scared me in the beginning so I never ventured into building with them.

Then of course Candy wants to know who this Ydnac bitch is.

The kind of prim you might require for a device on a jacket arm wouldn't be very complicated. Most that I've seen or bought tend to be hollowed out cylinders with an alpha texture like a badge or something. You don't need a class for that, just mess around with the building controls (especially path cut), but if you want a quick grounding in the basics of building then visit the Ivory Tower (search under the places tab) and work your way around the exhibits there.

The prim can be rotated and set quite close to the arm without giving away the fact that it isn't actually a part of the jacket. I think the main problem will be your customers since proper positioning of the prim requires the wearer to have basic modification skills of their own. I am still amazed how often residents will do their best to avoid tampering with the position of worn objects even when they look plainly ill-fitted. It would seem that vendors often get requests for help or advice in this respect.

I have a couple belts that need desperate adjustment so it doesn't look like I'm wearing a tire from a semi round my mid section LOL! Also need to work on some awesome boots I bought so they look right with my pants but need to find a pose stand. That sort of adjustments I'm ok with...not sure I'd mess with my Prim hair tho.

I've seen some people with belts like this and wonder if they are in same boat as I am, difficulty finding place to rez a pose stand or if, like you said, they just don't bother.

I will look for Ivory Tower and walk around and look. Thank you for the tip!
