I'm trying to layer a fabric texture over a template, but when I copy the fabric in its centered and a fraction the size of the template its layered over (so a small box of fabric in the middle of the screen). I've used photoshop before but apparently it ain't no bicycle - how do I get the fabric texture to either stretch or multiply itself across the screen? any help would be much appreciated,

thanks

The resolutions may be different. Check 'image size' and if they are, bump the fabric so it's the same res before you copy it - you can also check the pixel proportions and make sure they're the sameish size.

You can also 'transform' the selection and stretch it that way (ctrl-t or commant-t for mac methinks), but I *think* you'd probably end up with a bigger, worse resolution texture.

Depending on your ps version when you paste the fabric it ought to appear as a new layer (if not automatically, then select that it does so). You can then move it with the little movy-grab-tool-thingy (top right). Hope that helps. I probably shouldn't post so soon after waking up...

thanks Erin
Unfortunately adjusting the image size was about the same as stretching the image (changed from 256 / 256 to 1024/1024 pixels, and it came out bloated). I've tried transforming it, but as you said that's not really ideal. I'm using photoshop CS 8.0. appreciate the assistance, good morning ;)

Nuts. Yeah, it was entierly possible I was talking rubbish. If it's a pattern that could be tiled you're best bet would be repeating it (offset 50% each way, match up the edges in the middle) and patch it over or paste it as a pattern. Other than that, meh. Sorry!

Casper – Have you tried the Fill approach? Open the pattern in a window. Use the Square Selection tool to select it. Then Edit – Define Pattern.

Next go to your garment and use any selection method to select the area you wish to fill. Go to Edit – Fill and select Patterns and then select your new pattern from the drop down box. It will fill the selected area with your new pattern.

You may find that seams show at the titled edges. There are several ways to remove them. Blending tools, Clone tool, etc. You may also want to search for a thread where chip Midnight and others discuss “seamless patterns.’ This is where you take your small square, offset it, copy it, and make it into a larger seamless fill pattern.

I hope this helps you
