You should start by deciding what sort of acts of creation in which you would like to participate. A house/skyscraper/castle? Clothing? Weapons? Scripted gadgets? Upload your artwork to sell?
Once you've decided on what you'd like to do (everything), start practicing with the available tools. About 99% of all good work done was accomplished through having practiced first.
It also helps to have your own private land, even if only 512m².
Remember that anything you don't like you can delete with no prim use penalty.
If you have no idea where to start, perhaps you should try making walls and experimenting with building structures like houses.

Also check around The Shelter, the NCI, The Learning Centre and similar organisations (also FIND > EVENTS). There's information, people willing to provide tutorials and organised classes.

Cruise through the sandboxes as well (also in Find). I regularly visit the Mature Sandbox, and the two near the welcome area are also good. Fly around the sandbox, seeing what people are doing, and how they're doing it. I am NOT promoting copying other people's work, just saying learn from them by watching them and what they do. Also, very many people in the sandboxes are happy to help people who want to learn. Unless someone looks frantically busy, approach them and open with "Do you mind if I ask a question?" or something like that. Don't be offended if they snap back, sometimes you are the 17th person that has bugged them today, and they're having a bad day in RL - but just as often, they'll have been battling with a difficult build for 2 hours and will actually welcome the chance to take their mind off it while helping you out. In Afrikaans we have a saying, "Vra is vry, en weier daarby". It is sort of an extension to "If you don't ask, you don't get" but translates better to "To ask is free, but so is refusal" - So ask away, but be willing to accept a "no", no matter how snappish, and move on to ask someone else. Here endeth the lesson

Do a search for the 'Ivory Tower of Prims' and go through the tutorial there. Helped me a lot.
