I've seen it done. How do you use LSL to get a series of photos to smoothly crossfade?

You could use two stacked prims, or even use a hollowed box and put the textures on the inside and front.
Either way, you can use a little loop to increment or decrement llSetAlpha on the front face to reveal or hide the rear texture. Switch the front texture while the front's alpha is at 0, switch the rear's texture when the front is at 1.
