Weird mask issues with PSP

Okies, after 10 months or of happily making alpha transparency thingees with PSP8, suddenly the program seems to have gone all agly.

Before I'd do the old Layers>New Mask Layer>From Image, then follow up with Load/Save Mask>Save Mask to Alpha Channel. The transparent parts of my image would get saved as full black (full transparent) alphas.

Now, when I try this, ALL the black parts of my image become part of the transparency, with the grey parts translucent, and the black completely invisible.

I think PSP snuck off to the internet whilst I was sleeping, as I have a bunch of new brushes and fonts I never downloaded. So, I'm guessing I've acquired some JASC update or another.

Short of the question is, how do I fix this?

Virrginia,

When you make the new mask, make sure the settings in the window that pops up are correct. I'm guessing invert mask may be checked off. That will reverse the mask.

Aha! It had switched to "source luminescence" instead of "any non zero value"

Thanks so much!
