I'm on a hunt for really nice grass textures - nothing showy, just something beautiful and well crafted. Any of the texture artists out there have a rep especially for vegetation and landscaping?
Thanks.

Try Products Wanted or Help Wanted.
If you had wanted to learn how to make your own grass textures, this would be the place, but since that's not what you're asking, those other forums will be much more suitable. Good luck.

Hmmm...
Well, since I'm half competent with GIMP and people have always liked the custom textures I HAVE rolled out ... and I AM kind of picky, visually speaking - I can make this a two-fer. Do I just go out and look for nice grass pictures on the web and do the magic seamless thing to it, are there some clever tricks with creating and distorting noise that could be used - what would be the best approach?
And while I'm thinking of it, people have made some killer fur by layering alpha textures, I wonder if the same technique would be convincing for grass?

There are free grass textures in SL at various freebie places. I recall seeing a set in the stillman freebie area. Not sure if those are suitable but they can at least give you an idea of how grass has been done before. As to layering alpha grass it may not work right as there is an issue with how alpha layers show up when placed beside each other. Basically you end up seeing one layer or the other in a random fashion and it can be quite disconcerting.
