GamaSutra just posted an awesome tutorial on how to create 3d textures and objects in games. While never actually mentioning SL, all of the information they present certainly applies:

Actually, I suggest buying the book. It's well worth the read. I have a copy and its a good resource for beginners up to those at intermediate level.
