I am trying to really get my skins business going and wanted to know peoples thoughts on if its better to start with a small stock and update over time or open with a big store with a huge inventory. Also what do you consider the minimum stock if there is such a thing.

Thanks all.

I would say it's more impressive to have a large selection of inventory to sell than q shop with one or two items. But, really, I does not matter much as long as your product is good and priced right for the market you are attempting to cater to.

My personal experience has been small shops with several (but not huge) items for me to shop are actually more inviting for me spending lindens. Huge, full shops are really hard to shop......way too much wandering around to see everything. And then when you finally do browse the whole store and decide that the third skin you saw is the one you want to buy, you can't find it.........."it was over here..........no, over here.......dammit, I saw it right here" :)

Start small and grow........my "expert" opinion. :)

I've been trying a marketing experiment, but it hasn't run long enough for me to see the answer yet. I have two shops with nearly the same merchandise. In one, I have each item displayed as a photo on a separate prim, configured as a vendor box. In the other, I have five multi-item vendor boxes, with the same photos loaded as selectable images in them. The first shop LOOKS like it has more clothes in it. The second LOOKS less crowded. I'm not sure what I expect, but so far, sales are about the same in each.

Peggy, I agree that it's generally more impressive to shop in a place that has a large selection of inventory (up to a point), but I know of more than one VERY successful shop that has only two or three items to sell. They're just VERY good items (not clothing).

I sort of don't like the venders for shopping. First it sometimes takes a long time for the picture of the item to rez and then if the discription is not very thorough I want to be able to click on the picture and view the contents..........but on venders you only get the "pay x lindens". But, if the discription is complete on the picture that is not much of a problem..........hint hint to all you sellers out there!! :)

One other thing I've been seeing lately that erks me. Some sellers are now boxing their items up and putting that box in the sales picture so that when I click the "buy" button so I can see the contents all I see is another box. Why are they "hiding" the contents? And also, it makes unpacking somewhat confusing.........you wind up with two empty boxes to delete after you finally get your stuff unpacked. Is there a logical reason for packing items that way? I sure don't see it. :)

I noticed that but since doing scripting I discovered that the sales script only gives objects forcing people to box all the contents and drop that box in another. I changed the script so i could sell eyes for instance or clothing. There is another that will give all which works fine.

I've seen both kinds of shops. I think keeping a department like layout with shoes over here and skins over there stop the land of the lost feel from happening.

Thank you for the ideas. I'll start simple and expand as the inventory grows.
