Clothing Nightmare!

Hi All,

I have been messing with clothes and stuff now for a few weeks and have read through most of the tutorials I could find and think I understand most of it now!!

My problem is jagged curves. I realize that straight lines in SL are going to appear warped etc depending where on the AV they are etc, but I am having a real hard time making a smooth curve, say around the bust or neck. I can get it all layed out correctly, set the alpha channels etc but once it's uploaded (flattened, resized to 512x512 32bit TGA) the curves look jagged, rough and awful!

It's not my SL settings because I have it all turned up as far as I can without killing my machine but it looks the same on two different computers. Is there something I am missing, or a trick that I should know about to make curves appear smooth?

have you tried comparing your curves that you are drawing to the uv layer to see where the body would naturally curve in SL?

A few tips:

1. Use the vector tools to draw your curves, not the marquee tools. It's a common mistake for people to use a lasso or the elliptical marquee to make curved selections. The problem is the marquees are pixel-dependent, so the results will pretty much always look jagged. The vector tools (pen, shapes, etc.), on the other hand, are not dependent on pixels at all. Draw a vector curve, use it to form your selection, and the curved lines will anti-alias across the pixels much better.


2. Make sure you have anti-aliasing turned on for all your painting tools.


3. As Blaidd said, check how the curves compare with the UV lines. Often curves must be distorted on the 2D template in order to look right on the 3D model.


4. Try to avoid drawing curves across "problem areas" on the avatar templates. There are certain parts of the body that distort a lot as the body moves. It can be really challenging to keep things looking good in those areas. The shoulder area is a good example.
