Uploading A Skin -- Too Light

For some reason whenver I upload the three different parts of the skin I made, all the details end up faded. For example, I have black makeup coming off the eyes, but in SL it appears brown, not black. In Photoshop it looks jet black, but when I apply it in SL it is no where near that dark, same with nipples, lips, etc...

Can anyone help me with this problem?

use the 'info' palette in photoshop to get a reading on your colors - true black is 0,0,0 in rgb mode.

It is 0, 0, 0 but when I apply it in SL it comes out as really light. Like a brownish-pinkish color and everything else is lighter than it was in photoshop. I've even tried changing the contrast to make things darker, but it still ends up being the same lightness.

hummm... when you save the file, is there a color profile attached? i always uncheck it...

are you saving as targa .tga? 32-bit, no compression?

do you have a solid white alpha channel added? (not sure the extra channel is always necessary for skins, but i always add it by habit now.) if you're not sure what an alpha channel is, search the forums; there's many many threads already with the info...:)

p.s. also if you're not already... take advantage of the preview grids when they're open!! (like now:) whatever you spend in uploads over there doesn't apply to your account in the main grid. you'll have to upload your finals to the main grid, but you won't have to spend oodles during the testing process.

It was saving (somehow) as 8bit tga. I changed the image to 16 then to 32 and now I cant save it as a tga. Only a PSD, TIF, and two other extensions.

ohhh, sounds like you're changing image depth - leave that at 8-bit rgb. the '32-bit' i was referring to is when you 'save as'; after selecting targa then clicking 'save', you'll get another brief dialog asking for more .tga options - that's when you select 32-bit (and no compression).

hope i got that right - typing from memory here:)

Yay! I fixed it, but there is a problem with the eye lashes. When you look at them, they have a pink color where it should be completely transparent.

kewl!! :D ok... now you'll need to delve into the mysterious world of alphachannels to 'invisibilitize' your eyelashes. are you using the outstanding chip midnight templates? search the forums for him... if i remember right, the face template had some alpha built in for eyelashes; you'll want to just make that little upper-right corner completely black (and leave the rest solid white).

look in the 'channels' palette and look at channel #4... good luck:)

Hi Skye and Nyoko!

Glad you got this working, but don't put an empty (white) alpha channel in your images, please! All it does is make the file bigger (which means that it rezzes more slowly,) and make it susceptible to the dreaded "Alpha-Sorting Bug" without adding anything useful.

If you need transparency, for instance, for the eyelashes in the Head map, then use the 32 bit image with the alpha channel.

For everything else, use 24 bit, without one.

You'll get much better results!

Hope this helps!
