Bat wings in paticular, I'm wondering about. I have the frame no problem, but I need to fit the membrane on it. Would I want to try freehanding it then adjust the frame to fit or would taking a snapshot of the frame head-on then using it as a template work. Or is there something else that I'm just totally missing!
Thank you.

There are several ways to do this. The simplest is just to use a texture for the entire wing. I assume you are not too keen on that idea though, since it sounds like you are attempting to model the wings using prims.
I would sugest you meet up with Hudson Stryker and take a look at his dragon wings. I believe they look like what you are trying to accomplish. The scaffolds are made of cylinders and partial toruses, and the mebranes are made of partial spheres and planes. It takes a while to get the aplhas in the right places doing it this way, but the result looks great.
To answer your question about taking a snapshot, that is a good place to start, but keep in mind you are taking a 2 dimensional picture of a 3 dimensional object. It won't be exact. It should be enough to get you started though, and it should drastically cut down on the amount of uploades you would need to test in order to just freehand it.
I would suggest laying your scaffolding on top of a plane with a grid on it when you take the snapshot. This way you can have a good sense of how to compensate for the 3d to 2d distortion.
Edit: You might also find it's often easier to do this in reverse. Make the mebranes first and fit them together as best you can. Then build the scaffolding to cover the seams.

Cant sleep, prims will drift! cant sleep, prims will drift!
Or freakishly rotate at @#$!%!ied angles FNAR. or move when i let go of them, or just spontaniously pick up bizzare angles, or..or..

Did it, done. Since the wings are flat plane, I took a picture of one, did up a half-arsed texture and got it in one upload. For my next trick, I will learn to draw better with a mouse and my right hand. c.c <-- left handed and can not mouse left....
