Hi, I suddenly got interested in building. And picky as I am, I decided I wanted realistic looking walls for my log cabin and bough this set: I got a cabin set up, but I have a bit trouble finding a texture that works. I know what I should do if I had flat walls, I would look for a log wall texture, but that don't work here at all. Should I look for a close-up of a piece of wood with high level of details and repeat it many times? Would 512 x 512 or 1024 x 1024 work best? Is it possible to get the cut ends to look realistic? My walls are 10 x 5.5 x 0.6 m. I want a golden warm looking wall, not to dark. A light redwood texture maybe.

You ought to be able to use a drawn or photographed image of a single log, as you suggest, but because a log is long and thin you don't need the square dimensions you suggest. Try a 128 x 512 perhaps and then repeat it several times vertically on each wall segment. Because a sculpty only has one surface, that texture will be the same all over each wall segment, and so will the repeats. That means your log ends are going to look a bit goofy, not like log ends.

I was thinking of making some of those, I have a log cabin I made without them some time back. If I sold the sculpts, I would provide some baked textures and a shadow texture (at the very least a color map) so a buyer could actually use the objects, and texture them properly. To get around this omission by the seller here you will have to put Chosen Fews' texture map on and make your own texture, putting some shading between the logs. No flat texture will look good, may as well be a flat prim. IMO
And rolig's right too, can do it that way. It's still a flat texture but you can shade it a little for effect.

You could also experiment with tinting and repeats and bump-mapping for plywood. At least that would give you a way to test the various browns.

I am new to building, but I have experimented a lot with builds that are mod. What irks me with those, is that I can change the textures, move walls, remove things, even add on more rooms. It's still not "my"build, even if I changed every part. That's part of why I wanted to build something that I have all rights to. Knowing that I'm no sculpter, I choose to buy some stuff. I've looked on some log homes, and there are some I like, but I would change them too, even if they cost 3000-6000L. I don't have so much hope that I can learn all the tricks about building, but if I don't buy textures or sculpts, I would spend it on hair and clothes, and I have a ton of that already. Osprey and Rolig, thank you for the suggestions. I will look for closeups of timber and try that. I can also tinker a bit with plywood, it *is* wood after all.

From: Kornscope Komachi ... you will have to put Chosen Fews' texture map on and make your own texture, ..... Can you please steer me in the right direction for this - is it the numbered/coloured texture you apply to a sculptie to act as a reference for making - or at least trying to make - your own texture map? And if so is there any simple guide how to do it or is it a case of just eyeballing between the SL view and whatever graphics package one uses? Thanks

Suckulpty texturing can be difficult.. so therefore.. I would handle it something like this: haha

Learn something new every day .. thanks for the idea This was actually just a single texture used on a regular prim wall and also some logs made from the same texture. But I see what you are suggesting would be a very good way to add more realistic shadows and lighting that Photohack cannot handle.
