www.secondlife.com/downloads didn't occur to you, huh? :D

Here's a little tip when you have trouble finding a word on a web page (or in just about any other kind of document). Let the browser find it for you.

In both IE and Firefox, simply press ctrl-F. This is a standard shortcut to open the program's Find utility (also works in MS Word, Notepad, Acrobat, or almost any other program that displays text). Then just type whatever it is you're looking for, and the program will find it for you automatically. You don't have to search manually, EVER!

In this case, typing "ctrl-F" to open Find in Firefox, and then typing "downloads" into it, would look like this:

See how it highlights the dowloads link in green? You can find any other text item on any page the same way. For example, when you get to the Downloads page, you could type "Templates" to find the exact link for the template files.

Or, if all that is too hard to remember, Googling for "Second Life template download" will take you straight there.

Ah, I hadn't realized the Linden templates had been discontinued. Trust me; it's good news. LL's templates were really quite terrible. Chip's are very good, as are Robin's.

What was it from the LL templates that you feel is missing from Chip's?

What do you mean by "more clean"?

If you mean they were less detailed, well yeah, that's true. But that's why they were so bad. It's really hard to align things very well with so little UV information to go on. That's why Chip's and Robin's templates have been so helpful for so many people. I say good riddance those old crappy templates. It's about time LL got around to abandoning them.

Sorry if you disagree right now. I'm sure once you get used to Chips' you'll find that they are much more useful, and you'll be able to work better and faster than you every could with those old ones.

The old LL templates were really about ten kinds of useless, which is why I set about creating replacements for them when I first started trying to make clothes way back when. Sorry to hear that you're missing the old ones, Aaron, but they were really only suitable for things that didn't require matching anything across the seams, which is something that pretty much all clothing and skin work requires. If anyone wants to put up the original LL templates for download somewhere I'll add a link to them in the template thread.

I notice that there's one missing template not found in the new official set that was in the older, lower definition template set...

...it's the eye template!

I managed to find an old eye template PSD file on my hard drive. I don't remember where I got it from but the bottom most layer is LL's original eye template.

Here's a link to download if anyone is looking for the template:

I'm so old school I have all the Linden templates on my HDD and I'm making my tats and clothes like it's still 2005... Well, maybe now matching sleeve sides will be a little easier.
I'm not deleting the old templates, if you want them, I'll prop them up somewhere.

Well I had my technique to use the old ones for seamless textures what I developed by playing around with them. And I am also not using PhotoShop. The layers are a bit different now and the background graphics I had to get rid of. Maybe my technique was not usual but I wasn't using usual programms either I guess.

If you really want the old templates then you could download SLCP and grab the images from there. Seems silly to me though.

heh just using 'HDD' tells me you're old school.. the forum avatar helped...

if anyone does get all those template put up somewhere even temporarily, could you link them? I'd like to add them to the archive for the new SL specific site I'm building for my profile/tips and tricks I've learned

Are you sure those are the old LL templates? I remember the old templates being void of any wireframes and looking more like paper cutouts labeled "torso", "skirt" and etc.

Wow, how'd you manage to find that old link, Viktoria? That's absolutely the original LL templates and I'm guessing the same web link as before. Nice work :).

Either I have an incredible memory, or Safari automatically adds download links to Spotlight comments. The first explanation sounds more impressive, so let's go with that one :D

oh heavens, I'd forgotten how hideous and useless those truly were, I think I switched to chips about 2+ years back... ya know the ones where you can actually tell where the polgons match up, (and if you save it out as a skin and view in poser it helps to visualize all the stretch zones)

and I do seem to remember they had an interm set that had the polygon mesh, but nothing to the level of chips work, hey chip did they pay you licensing on that? or at least give you credit? =)

I'm credited on the downloads page, but no pay, alas. They asked and I said sure. :)
