Been making clothes..I"m a big time novice...i have a question that may seem basic but I jsut cant get it..I have a swatch of jean fabric it's seamless...i have like the swatches of pockets and zippers and stuff but I will try to ask this right...Ok my jeans look patchy..it's not like smooth..if i put the watch on the template and stretch it the texture looses it jean look so i put several swatches down and eve when i merge them they still look like diff peices...If that makes sense and you can help please do..i would like to make a decent pair of jeans...Oh btw i use gimp for the most part.

A seamless swatch may work for texturing a prim but I don't think it will succeed for clothes. My own solution was to take some photos of my own rl jeans and load those into photoshop and work from there.

You need to start with a picture of blue jeans that is about the same size as your template so you don't have to enlarge it too much to get it to fit the template. Enlarging pictures make them blurry or jagged or both. If the picture is too big, for the template, that is fine. A paint program like gimp can shrink a picture with better results that trying to enlarge it.
If that is not the problem, it would be helpful for you to post a picture here so I can tell what you mean by going all weird.
Don't give up. You are on your way to becoming a fashion designer. =)

Some seamless textures are not really seamless. For example, if the brightness varies from one side to the other, you will see light/dark stripes when you tile. But, if you had a true seamless denim tile texture, you would still need to add shadows and folds manually...
So, the idea about taking a picture of a whole pair of jeans is good. For that matter, it is probably good to be *in* the jeans when you take the pictures. In SL, the light usually comes from the Sun or Moon, so taking the picture in away that gives some shadows and folds tht are similar to the usual in SL might be good.
The artists *draw* the shadows and folds on. I am no artist. But, if you get a picture with shadows and folds, and zoom in real close, you can usually see how they work.
Have you looked at Gimp, From Beginner to Pro? Good book. Amazon.

Avoid tiling on clothes

I would definately avoid tiling your textures on clothes echoing a statement above. Also reiterating you will get best results from taking real life pics or scans of the same pair of jeans. Take separate pics or scans as needed to get the pockets and seams and fly and cuffs. Then place them in the appropriate areas keep everything as layers until you are sure of your placements, then you can use a blur or smudge brush to reduce the edges on those elements. Also if you are getting color or shadow mismatches then you can use the color eyedropper sampler to take a sample of a midrange color between the two and then use a paint brush with a reduced opacity to paint the edges as well. It sounds like what you are using is something you got off the net and if that is the case it will almost always yield worse results.

Wow such good advice from you all i really appreciate it..I attempted to upload some of the pics of jeans said the pics were too big..I got them from Renderosity there are pics of whole top part of the jean front and back, trim, and then like a swatch of the denim...I really love making clothes..i do often get discouraged because i have such little knowledge of the programs I am useing..I will keep trying to upload one of the pics so you can see what i'm talking about..and may order that book from amazon mentioned.
