create your wing on a transparent background much like you would a clothing item with the alpha layers. upload the image and rather than applying the texture to your avatar via appearance mode, you would add it to flat, square prim. 1 for each wing. then basically just arrange them side by side on the ground as you think they should be in relation to one another. after you have the two wings angled as you would like, link them together and take them into inventory. then just attach to the point on your body you would like them to go. at this point, when you attach they are not going to be as you want them to be. you will need to find yourself a nice appearance pose stand, hop on it and edit the rotation and placement while the wings are actually attached to your avatar. once you have them where you want them, you can detach them and the next time someone goes to wear them, they will land where you put them before you detached. granted, because you said you had made some clothing i am assuming you know a thing or two about a thing or two. go ahead and IM me in world if you need some help with the prim part after you get your wings done in paint. i usually have some time to teach the basics of prims. its pretty simple once you get pointed in the right direction. or ask some specific questions concerning what i just said right here and i'm sure you'll get your answers

a couple of additions to janie's nice post
a simple pair of wings can be either a single hollow, cut cube or two cubes, one for left wing and one for right
if you take the latter approach, your right wing will be a thin cube prim, then you want your wing texture as janie described on only the 2 main sides of the prim. You'll want to apply a 100% alpha transparent texture to the other 4 sides or else the edging will look strange.
I often find it is easier to orient the wings as an attachment if you add a third prim to the mix -- a small sphere that is rotated to 0,0,0. I make this the parent prim (i.e. make sure it is the last thing selected before you link).
Couple other notes on your wing prims: 1. you can make it thinner than 0.01m by turning it into a sphere and dimpling it (you have to have oriented it the right way and experimentation will show you how this works), and then turn it back into a cube 2. if you want a curve in your wings, try using hollow cylinders or spheres -- but be prepared to carefully work how the texture sits on each side
lastly i would note that while we are talking about wings using textures on 2 prims, you can also make wings entirely out of many prims
