any tutorial for PS is pretty good for PSP starting from about v7 and up, v8+ even moreso, most of the functionality is the same, and if you've any familiarty with either one it's not to hard to convert the instructions.

A tutorial on creating skins would likely NOT reference Photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro, or GIMP, or others directly, but reference methods of working with images familiar to users of all those software applications. You won't find a complete tutorial on skinning in one thread without reference to topics in other threads where techniques have already been discussed thoroughly. Why type up all that good information again?
I would worry less about what application you are using and more about what skills you can bring to the one you choose. Can you work with complex alpha channels? Can you blend seams well with the visual aids that are out there (like Chip's and Robin's template guides). Can you generate your own UVW's? Do you have a good fast preview method? What is your technique of choice (photo sourcing, or painting from scratch, or both)? These are the types of questions that matter more than what application you choose to execute a skin design with. The good news is that all of the questions I mentioned above have already been answered right here in these forums in other threads (too many to reference). Many of them DO reference Photoshop workflow because it is industry standard among professionals, and a lot of those professionals are the ones handing out the tips. That doesn't really matter if you know PSP well enough to read between the lines and translate workflow and menu structure. The best place to start is with the stickies at the top and drill your way into the numerous others found as cross reference within those posts, or through a clever key word search. Skinning involves several software skills specific to working with 2D images as part of 3D content. You will probably find, at some point, that a 2D image editor is NOT ENOUGH to do what you want to do. Some 3D effects are best handled with 3D modeling and painting applications. When that time comes you will need to choose between Maya, 3ds Max, Lightwave, ZBrush, and others. Again, the choice of application will matter less than what skills you can bring to that application and how you leverage it with SL and your 2D image editing application to maximize your workflow effeciency and achieve a fast, good end result. |
