My goal is to texture a black area of my avatars terminator suit, specifically around his head as well as the underside of the shoulder plates.

In order to texture only one 'face' of a prim....first select the box up top in your 'edit' window named 'select texture' then left click on the face you wish to color or texture and then texture as usual.
