Corel PSP X texture question

I have finally worked out how to create simple clothing with alpha channels blah de blah - the problem I have now I hope is simpler to solve:

Recently when I have selected a texture to fill an area of the template - the texture itself is showing as semi transparent - I have uploaded an item succesfully (in that the alpha channel is correct, no white etc) and it shows as a faint semi -transparent item (handy in the future if only I knew how it happened :-) ).

I am guessing that at some point I did something to the opacity but for the life of me I can not figure out how to get back to solid textures. I have searched the programmes Help - which was NOT helpful. Any ideas?

Yeah, PSP's help file sucks, especially in regard to alpha channels. It doesn't even correctly define what they are or what they're for.

Anyway, if your stuff is showing up as semi-transparent instead of opaque, then you must have gray in your alpha where white should be. There can be no other explanation. To fix it, do the following:

1. To view what your alpha looks like, go Layers -> Load/Save Mask -> Load Mask From Alpha Channel.

2. Now that the alpha has been copied to a mask, delete the channel itself. This will eliminate the possibility of ending up with more than one alpha, which would be bad. I don't remember off hand what the exact menu command is to delete the channel, but I think it's Image -> Delete Alpha Channel... and then in the dialog that pops up, make sure Delete All Alpha Channels is checked, and click OK. If that's not exactly it, look for something similar.

3. On your mask, take a look at where the grays are. Edit as necessary to make them white. Then re-save back to alpha by going Layers -> Load/Save Mask -> Save Mask To Alpha Channel.

I don't remember off hand what the exact menu command is to delete the channel, but it's probably something like Layers -> Load/Save Mask -> Delete Alpha Channel. Sorry I don't remember if that's it precisely. It's been a while since I've used PSP. If that's not it, look for something similar.

It's under the 'image' drop-down menu. :)
And yes the help file is major rubbish.

Thank you Chosen and Sally - not quite there yet but persevering!

"On your mask, take a look at where the grays are. Edit as necessary to make them white." I think this is the bit that's causing me trouble - I don't know why it's showing as grey now or how to change it.

As I said - I must have done something without knowing because this didn't happen before. For example - if I draw a simple outline on the templates and flood fill a texture - the texture is semi transparent and so shows as grey on the Alpha. Before - the textures were solid and showed white on the Alpha. What did I do???

Also in the layer menu is edit overlay. It is only active you are on a mask that is the alpha channel. It allows direct editing of the mask, so the next time you have this you can just get solid black.
More than likely your black 256, 256, 256.
Sorry I was late answering.

Thanks, Sally. I'll edit my earlier post. I think I remember now. It's Image -> Delete Alpha Channel, and then in the popup dialog there's a checkbox for Delete All Alpha Channels, right?

I'm not following you here. 256,256,256 is white, not black. Was that a typo or did I miss what you meant?

If you're creating your mask with either the From Image option or one of the Show/Hide Selection options, then any and all visible transparency will affect the mask. I'd be willing to bet that when you flood-filled the canvas, either you had the opacity setting on the Flood Fill tool at somewhere below 100% or else the opacity setting on the layer itself was less than 100%. If you want pure white on your alpha, make sure that whatever is the source for the mask is 100% opaque.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

Chosen - you are a diamond. Finally fixed it - you were right , I had somehow reset the opacity value of the layer.

Good to know there are helpful (and patient!) PSP users out there!

Glad you got it worked out, Evie.

I'm actually not a PSP user, but I've been called worse things before. :D I tinkered with it for a few days a couple years ago to learn enough about it to write a tutorial or two at the time. I haven't touched it since. I was just going off memory and off what's common to most paint programs.
