I am trying to make a pair of stockings with a see through fabric, like nylon. I thought I could just fill a layer with the color I want using a 50% opacity. It looks correct on the template but when I upload the image it shows as solid , not see through in the game. I hope this question makes sense, I have posed it in several classes but I always get the same answer which isn't working. I'm sure there is a way to do it as I have seen clothing in the game that is see-through. Thank you.

If you want an item to be sheer, you have to make the alpha a shade of grey.
As you probably already know, on an alpha layer, anything:
white = visible black = transparent
and any shade of grey in between black and white will give you varying degrees of sheer.

To expand on HoseQueen;
I use to have the exact problem. I finally learned to just select the area I want slightly trasnparent, open the Alpha Channel layer, and go over that area with a slightly see through brush in white, so basically you do what Hose said and make it gray.
I used to use Jasic and it picked up semi-trasnparencies when you saved a selection as an alpha, but now that im on Adobe Photoshop CS it doesnt, so I had to learn how to do it manually too. Its not as convenient, but oh welll...

I have 2 versions of photoshop
1 uses a TGA plugin wihich utilises a grayscale alpha channel
so u want semi seethru use any shade of gray the darker the more invisible
2 uses the opacity of the layers without an Alpha channel as such
Have a transparent background or no background at all
set the texture layer opacity down ..save as tga and voila..easy
I prefer the use of the grayscale Alphachannel as sometimes the areas of opacity / transparancy do not realte to the texture in your layers..
the best alphas are solid texture with detail only in the grayscale Alpha channel..yummm no horrid Alpha white halo...
