This may be one of the silly posts out there, but I just wanna share my opinion... I have never seen a designer in SL use cubic zirconia, for example, instead of diamonds. I kind of believe in enlightening people about first life through Second life, and I see this as a good opportunity to encourage ppl to learn more about diamonds and where they come from. They're basically blood money. People who starve mine them. On the other hand, cubic z. is a wonderful, inexpensive alternative, with characteristics of its own, yet it looks pretty much like a diamond! Just wanted to throw this out there If no one uses this idea, I will. Thnx for reading.

Ethics questions aside, since you chose to put this in the texture forum how exactly does one paint a picture of a cubic zirconia instead of a picture of a diamond?

lol that's a good question now, isn't it. How about just naming it "cubic zirconia" instead of diamonds.

That's what I figured you'd say, but in that case, why talk about it in the texture forum? Isn't this a more genral, maybe cultural, issue than a texturing issue?

Well, while we're on the subject of why diamonds suck, let's also mention: - Their price is artificially inflated by DeBeers, the only major diamond concern on earth - The place of the diamond as an engagement necessity was artificially inspired by DeBeers' marketing - Diamonds don't hold their value and are useless as investments - Diamonds can now be created in a laboratory and are chemically and physically identical to their mine-dwelling counterparts, but at a fraction of the cost - You're telling me I'm supposed to be impressed by carbon? Carbon?!

And...

...you can have the cremated remains of a loved one turned into a diamond as a lasting reminder. Not my cup of tea but there you go, the miracle of science.

I've never understood that. You'd think women would view any guy who'd spend half a year's salary on a piece of rock as mentally unsound and not a good choice as a partner. People thought pet rocks were silly, yet most women are wearing one on their finger

My husband, with love and the best of intentions, wanted to get me an expensive diamond engagement ring. I've never been fond of diamonds for a number of reasons, many mentioned already. He couldn't believe it when I said I would rather spend the money on a house or a great trip. In the end, my Montana Sapphire is prettier than most diamonds, fun to watch because it changes color with the weather and cost about 1/4 as much as he would have spent on a diamond. .

Okay, you're mostly water, but what there is of you besides water is mostly carbon. Yes, that's exactly my point. Carbon is a wildly common element. They want me to spend two months salary on a lump of carbon.

It's amazing what social conditioning will do to a person, hehe. I'm glad you talked him out of it. The world needs more women like you Rose!

I'm with you, Rose! I'd be honored to wear a beautiful saphire, or emerald, or heck - a bread twisty over a diamond, any day, hands down. Especially if it came with love from someone who genuinely cherished me and meant it as a symbol of all that an engagement ring should hold. As for the diamonds in our smaller world - no matter what you call it if it twinkles... they will buy.
