Anyone know of a good gimp tut for hair textures. They seem to be hard to find. The youtube ones are not good at all. I prefer written ones rather than video.

I don't know of any good hair tutorials for the Gimp, but since our motion blur doesn't work the same was the Photoshop motion blur, we can't use it to make the striations.
Instead, we use anything else to make striations. I know one person who makes her hair with a bar code generator. I'm not so keen on that, I tend to prefer making noise, then using motion blur, distorts (especially shift) or slur or spread noise to make the striations. (All of these are under Filters.)
You can then colourise your striation layer with the tools under the Colors menu, such as Colorise, Color Balance, or Hue-Saturation.
Add another layer to be the base colour of the hair, maybe have another striations layer to give the hair more shades, play with the transparencies of the various layers, and you have your lovely hair.
