Hi,
I am trying to create a text texture in Gimp where the letters are transparent. Can anyone tell if this possible and how it can be done?

Sure...
Create your text with the text as the FG color. Once you have that, do a select by color, and then clear (CTRL-K) the selection.
Walla... Your text is transparent.
