Thanks. ![]() I know everyone is gonna tell you "save, save, save" or "save, and save often" - and you're gonna "yeah - I know, I know - but it's too late now", but here is how I make it concrete: Make ctrl-S (or the mac equivalent) part of your push-away-from-desk movement. Every time you lean back to ponder - every time you stand up to run off to the bathroom - every time the doorbell or phone rings - hit save as you push off. Good luck! |

Ouch! ![]() I'm not aware of one either, unless there's one in the CS version. I'm using 7.0.1. Wish there was better news to share... I know everyone is gonna tell you "save, save, save" or "save, and save often" - and you're gonna "yeah - I know, I know - but it's too late now", but here is how I make it concrete: Make ctrl-S (or the mac equivalent) part of your push-away-from-desk movement. I don't even think anymore, I just do it automatically. These sorts of experiences are fast teachers. (But I had lots of practice from using MS Word... ![]() |

Afraid that there isn't one in CS or CS2, either.
But, ummmm, I'm a little confused. You said that you lost your PSP file? Is that the format for Paintshop Pro? Or is it just a typo? Because I don't know if PSP has an auto-save or not. (The format for PS is .psd.) I've found that it's worth it to save incremental backups, too, just in case. I do it whenever I think of it, just in case I need to retreat to a step that's farther back than the History palette allows. You can do the same thing with Snapshots, but they vanish when you close the document; so they won't help if the cat sits on the switch for the Power Strip. ![]() _____________________

I'm going to need a bigger hard drive with all of these incremental backups ![]() |

I keep my history states set to like 60 or so. Sure, it means PS eats RAM, but I like being able to go back if I need to. Go WAY back... I also try to remember to let up on the brush I am using every once and a while, so I don't have a whole big painted area saved as a single history state...
Other than that, I hit CTRL-S a lot. ![]() |

mcgeeb, you don't have to have a lot of incremental backups, unless you want them. Generally, I just toggle between A and B (for instance, NewShirt A.psd and NewShirt B.psd.) I look at the top of the window, to see which one I'm using, and Save As... the other one.
It's only when I'm doing something I'm not sure of that I'll make a whole new one, and I generally do that by clicking the "Create New Document from Current State" button at the bottom left of the History palette. Then I save that as, for instance, "NewShirt Collar 1.psd" so that I know what bit I was experimenting with, close that document, and go back to work on the A or B. When I have the thing the way I want it, and am ready to move on to the next project, I'll save a copy as Fini (NewShirt Fini.psd) so that I know that's the actual finished image. At that point, depending, I might blow away the incremental copies, or I might put them on a CD. No point allowing them to clutter up the hard drive, though. Vast empty spaces on the hard drive REALLY improve PS performance, in my experience. Fenrir, I'm forever forgetting to lift the brush while painting (too many years of doing watercolor and/or acrylic, where that's the wrong thing to do; ) so I'm really glad that there's a History Brush. When part of the line goes wrong, I don't Undo. I just whip out the 'ol History Brush, click on the step before the stroke, and Undo just that portion of the line that went wonky. ![]() Which lets me correct with precision, which I always enjoy. ![]() _____________________

I'm glad you mentioned the history brush, because I tend to keep down the brush too long also. I use the paintbrush a lot. Time to back up my stuff this weekend also before I lose any of those. How I ended up with over 2GB of files I don't know. I better delete some of the stuff I don't need and keep what I do need anymore. Then theres the inventory inworld I need to deal with. It's busting at the seams. I wish the inventory on SL was more like windows. ![]() Also the outfit I did make this week is done and I did save that this time whenever I left the PC. I'm happy because it took so long to work on. Hopefully I learned my lesson, because I don't want to redo things again. |
