I made a skin that I really like; it has masculine hairy legs that look realistic. However, whenever the AV moves, spreads his feet apart, or jumps, the crotch area stretches and I wind up with these horrible black splotches on the upper inner thigh. Is there a way to avoid this? Possibly some visual clue as to where I should stop painting?

If you want a visual cue, make a version of the skin that has the UV map from the templates showing. Put that version on the avatar, and then watch which section of the template is the problem area as the avatar moves. Adjust the skin accordingly.
You might find that there's nothing you can do to correct the problem fully. The avatar model is not particularly well put together, and it has serious limitations/flaws. You can probably minimize the problem from how it is now; just don't obsess too much about making every last trouble spot absolutely perfect, since that might not be entirely possible.

There's a row of polygons on the inner thigh where each poly only receives about 2-3 pixels of texture. Those polys stretch from very small to 5-6 times their original size when the legs move in certain ways. The inevitable result is horrible smearing of the texture. The only way to avoid that is to avoid putting any contrasting colors there. Keep those polygons a solid color, preferably the base skin color.

THAT is why it does that!! I never realized it was a 1 or 2 pixel size poly
ouch no wonder you guys are always saying it is poorly put together
(this is my first experience with anything to do with designing with 3d, so just kinda go with the limitations)
Thank you all for the very useful information I see posted here all the time!!!
