I have looked all over these threads and have not found what I am looking for so I am hoping someone here can help, as you all have been most helpful to others. Now I have read the book on the Templates page and it says "Leave the skin making to SL" which obviously few people listen to as many people are making there own skins now. So my question to you all, is how do you take 3 png files (head, upperbody, lowerbody) and turn them into one tga skin file?? Thanks in advance.

The easiest way is to apply each texture as a tattoo in the appropriate texture slot in appearance mode

Most of the skins being sold are done that way. The other method is to create replacements for the files in SL's character folder located in your SL install directory. The benefit of this method is the skin can be made modifiable by the user. They can change the skin tone and makeup using the sliders in appearance. This is more complicated, both in the creation and distribution. Buyers will need to be able to download the textures they need to replace and you'll either need some kind of self installer or you'll need to explain to everyone what to do. The other drawback is you're far more open to having your work stolen and distributed since you have no way to prevent a buyer from sharing the files with others. If you're interested in doing them that way then Namssor is the leading expert

From: Chip Midnight ...create replacements for the files in SL's character folder located in your SL install directory... I assume the client bakes these local files in with the clothing textures that get uploaded. Yes? Also, if so, when you change clothes - do other residents see the base skin from their local files until you finish baking?

You're correct. The character folder files are what SL combines to produce the default skin textures. Those get baked together with your clothing layers and uploaded. It's those composite textures that everyone around you sees. If you're using a skin that uses customized character folder files, people around you will always see your customized textures rather than the normal default textures.

Thanks very much for all your help Chip and your templates rock. But I have come to the conclusion that until I can master the facial features (i.e. eyelashes) I am just gonna stick to HiDef Tattoos. Made a few already and they look great. Already have a list of buyers a mile long with orders. (Currently taking orders so that I can see what the public wants and go from there). Party On!
