Haha, what a word! it means crazy by the way - a south african thing... anyway, to the point,

I think im going crazy buying lots of programs i dont even know are compatible with eachother.

Right,

Daz Studio and Poser - how are they linked? Ive now got poser.... Why are those two always 'together'. I believe im able to download my SL avatar in poser and preview the clothes i make in Jasc Paint shop pro 9. Am i correct? So where does good old Daz come into this?

So im using psp9, and only just about got my head around it all!

Now im reading a lot about 3d drawing programs...Ghostpainter2 , deep paint 3d and body paint (in a thread further on). I understand ghostpainter is a 'bridge between PhotoShop and 3ds Max.' So im assuming that would be useless to me as i use psp9.....

Oh the confusion... ooo theres another one, 3ds Max.

Im afraid im entirely confused once again. I dont want to wast money buying a 3d program thats not compatible with psp9.

so there we have it....

3ds Max
Daz Studio
Poser
and the 3d drawing programs,
and my little psp9.....

Please help me i dont know what to buy next!

Daz is like a lightweight version of Poser. If you have Poser you don't really need Daz. You can use Poser for previewing SL textures and also for creating avatar animations.

You're correct that Ghostpainter won't do you any good without Photoshop and 3ds Max, but Bodypaint and Deep Paint are both standalone apps that would be useful (one or the other since they both do the same thing). They're both paint programs similar to PSP or PS except they allow painting directly on a 3d model. They wouldn't replace your PSP since they're intended specifically for 3d texture work and PSP would be a better choice for doing any 2d work.

3ds Max and Maya are both high end 3d Animation programs. Both can be useful for SL related work but they're very expensive so I wouldn't recommend either unless you plan to use them for a lot more than just SL. They also both have incredibly steep learning curves.

You're pretty well equiped already, so the only reason you might consider adding another program like DeepPaint or Bodypaint would be to gain the ability to work directly on the av model. Personally I'd recommend learning to use what you have before you spend any money on more tools.

and some dudes face was put on an avatar! so can i put my face on my avatar.... it looks like it can also gett mapped out in 2d.

will that 2d mapping fit around an SL avatar? and could i upload it into SL, is it legal.

If you don't have Poser already, DAZ|Studio does pretty much the same thing, and it's FREE. I own the current version of DAZ|Studio, and I also own Poser 5. I find DAZ easier to use. It has a better User Interface, in my opinion. Poser, on the other hand, is more powerful, and has some features like the Materials Room and being able to do dynamic clothing that the current DAZ Studio can't touch.

For purposes of use with SL, such as making animations or previewing clothing textures on the imported avatar and clothing .obj forms, either Poser or DAZ will do the same things, and DAZ is free, while Poser costs hundreds of dollars. If all you are doing is stuff for SL, get DAZ.

Hehe, thanks. I'm probably closer to the "van down by the riverside" end of the scale.

I haven't had a lot of luck with DAZ Studio - when I bring animations into SL I find some limbs don't move or move incorrectly. I'm using the SL manikin and BVH plugin.

Pity because I really like DAZ Studio.

oh yes.... forgot to ask chip

so if i had to get deep paint for instance, id be able to paint directly onto a 3d model. Would i have imported my SL avatar into this program?

say i paint a shirt onto my 3d model, in deep paint... can i then get that shirt into SL? or if i had to create my own skin, on this 3d model, id obviously need to get this into SL....

is this possible...

excuse me being so naive. i am researching too....
