quick template question

Hello,
I apologize for the simple question, but.. I'm new. :) I downloaded Chips templates and I've read some info. Question is: When using the templates as a guide, I see the labeled/color coded regions along the outer template (A1, A2, etc.)... But i'm not totally certain if my clothes need to stop at the edge of the squares, or continue further to the absolute edge of the template (indicated with the rainbow colored outer border that outlines the template - to the edge of black)

Can someone please clarify? Thanks in advance,

Design to the edge of the guidelines, but extend the color you are using to the rest of the negative space around the template.

Hi there Brian

Welcome to SL

Take it through all the way to the "rainbow colour" outer border / where black begins. And as Enoch says extend past that even.

When uploading the texture in SL you will get a preview though - which will help.

In SL - file menu -> upload image -> select image. Then from the drop down menu in the preview you can choose the body part the texture is for, example male upper body.
Left click, hold and drag mouse to zoom, hold ctrl as well for more rotation options. You'll be able to get a fairly good idea of what matches where, before you have to upload. If it isn't right - hit cancel and refine your texture a bit more.

Another good idea is to upload Chip's templates as textures and create clothing from that. Let your Av wear it and you will be able to see clearly what matches. This is a very nice reference.

Just remember to resize Chip's templates to 512x512. The bigger size is usefull while working on the item in Photoshop or whatever, but when you upload to SL the extra size is not needed and only adds to slower response times in world.

If you turn off the edge matching guide layers (the colored parts) and look at the bottom grid layer, the outside edge of the outside edge lines is the actual match point for a fully rezzed texture. To prevent visible seams on textures that aren't fully rezzed you should extend your painting to the outside edge of the colored edge matching guide or a little beyond as Anyanka and Enoch mentioned :)

Like the Enoch and Anyanka have said, extend it.

Here's why: When fully rezzed the only clothing that will shown is the area in the UV squares. So, while designing, keep that in mind. However, we extend the fabric past the line to 1) make sure the fabric covers the seams (one pixel off on the template and your seams look ugly) and 2) while rezzing there is a tendency for clothing item to be blurred and that blur WILL include elements (mostly averaged/blurred color) beyond the seam edge, so it just looks better rezzing if the fabric looks the same color as it will once rezzed.
