I hate my name tag!

This might be the wrong forum, but since I'm a builder and textureress (and a word smith), I have to ask it here.

I don't wear a name tag in RL, and I don't want to wear one in SL either. No, I don't want to turn off my name tag in PREFERENCES, because it doesn't fix my problem.

Just imagine: you're involved in combat, you've made these awesome camouflage skins that let you blend in with the environment. You are practically invisible. Ya think??? The freaking name tag is what gets you shot. It hovers over you, pretty much like a huge arrow pointing down at you saying "Shoot me, I am stupid".

I'm very creative, believe me.........but this is a problem I can't find a solution for.

Maybe there IS no solution, but if there is...... will someone share it please?

I think invisiprims hide an avatar's nametag as well as avatar mesh.

Invisiprims are ordinary prims with a script that makes them transparent. The ground and other prims will show through them, avatar mesh won't. They are typically used for high heeled shoes, to hide that ugly bulky flesh coloured system heel.

Thanks for your reply, Suzy..... invisiprims do not hide the name tag, I've tried.... is there a type of invisiprim that I don't know of?

There must be, I once picked up a freebie 'invisibility suit' that hid the name tag as well as the avatar. I don't remember where I got it though, and I can't get inworld right now to check.

Hi I remember a post where a woman said after opening her new business was being harassed by some mafia types and they had no name tags she could see. Well, someone replied that there was a script that could make your tag appear somewhere else. I dont know anymore about it than that. Perhaps you should find that script?

It's likely those "mafia" guys were using an animation to offset the avatar's visible appearance from its actual physical location. Animations can move the body up to 20 meters in order to accommodate things like dance moves, gymnastics, etc., things which might require a long range of movement. The same principle certainly could also be used semi-permanently to make an avatar appear to be where it's not.

So, if you see an avatar without a name tag, take a look around. The tag should be somewhere close by. It might be on the other side of a wall or something, but it has to be there. Look for the telltale green dot on the minimap. There's no way to offest that. And keep in mind, the person might actually be above or below you, so make sure to look in every direction.

Anyway, Ravi, I can understand your frustration. It would be nice to be completely invisible sometimes, especially for games. Unfortunately though, the potential for griefing that comes with invisible avatars is a bit too high for LL's liking. They nurfed the ability of invisiprims to hide name tags a while back, and since then, I don't think there's been any way to do it.

For what it's worth, I tend to agree with LL on this one. While it's a shame that certain types of games requiring stealth cannot be done very well in SL, I shudder to think what would happen were griefers able to be completely anonymous.

Why not be able to get rid of the name tag, but keep the ability to hover your mouse and get the name, plus right click to get the profile?

Would be nice for a land owner to be able to disable or enable name tags on their property.. for use in gaming. ((is that just a tourist, a normal citizen, or is that a spy from the other side?))

Yes they do. So to answer your question, probably. What they're talking about is a prim with a script called invisibility prim refresh.

It probably should be pointed out that doing this could get you in trouble. It's an ARable offense, or so i've been told.

It is possible to hide the name tag. It is also probably a TOS violation. Do know doing so still won't make you invisible on the mini-map or the big map. Nor will it stop radar or sim scans from finding you.

Not to mention essentially all online games have your name/handle floating over your head to help identify you to others.

Thank you all for your replies. I don' think I would get AR'd because I would use it only on my land, with my combat partner or friends. However, if it can't be done, it can't be done. I'm happy I have a definite reply now :)

I agree with Chosen Few. It would not be good at all if total invisibility were a feature everyone could use everywhere.

Indeed, invisiprim hides nametag (make the invisiprim bigger). (:

It might be a problem with alpha trees around, though.

ANd what about the green dots, I can still find and shoot you. or turn of rendering of all kinds of things untill you standout like the full moon at night. sometimes you just have to pretend that you can't cheat.

If you are just doing this with friends for private combat, why don't you ask your friends to click the option to hide other people's names right there in the default interface preferences? :)
