okay this may sound silly but after humming and hawing for weeks or possibly even months (lost count) I finally switched over to adobe photoshop from using fireworks and gimp. Although I have still a lot to learn on its abilities I must say that i'm glad i forked over the money hehe.

So thanks those who gave input and if anyone can possibly afford it photoshop is most definately worth the investment if your going to use it a lot (i will be ingame and out of game)

All that stuff that is in my head is about to come out onto "paper" for lack of a better way to say it
