Hi everyone,
I'm learning to create prim hair, and have started with women's hair because frankly, it is easier to completely mess up and have come out looking like actual hair. But I'm curious, - is there demand for Men's hair? I know there is not a lot of selection, but is there demand? And if so, what styles would men (or women) like to see men avies wear?
Thanks!

Thanks! there is, up until recently, i've had to modify women's hair for myself, because I got tired of looking like an elvis impersonator with the pompadours they have us starting with. Thankfully, Zaige came along with some really nice men's hair, but there's always room for more. So, put me down as a "YES PLEASE"

Yes there is a demand! I have hunted everywhere for hair, and have resigned myself to having to learn to make my own... and have envied the 1000s of options for females... I think I found about half a dozen male styles all up, and all variations of the same kind of thing... actually the same applies to shoes... also hard to find... as to what I would like.. modern stuff that presents an alternative to the mostly Goth styles...

Try the Spa Salon
11-16-2005 15:01
Guys tired of goth and backstreet boys looks may want to try the spa salon if you are interested in alternative styles. As for demand, I think there is demand because of a general sense of a lack of diversity. Be aware, though, that men are less likely to change their form to fit hair than are women (though I hate changing my form to fit stuff too) so it might be good to have a few different fits of the products, or to have them be modifiable. Cheers and good luck.

Heck yes! I have oft posted requests for custom hair designs, and no one has ever taken me up on it. There are only a few really good men's hair designs in SL, so more and more, all of us guys are looking like sadistic Stepford '05 clones!

When I first came to SL I wanted a flat top, or even a 'high and tight' military cut, but you just can't find those. I assume it's just REALLY hard to do a really short hair. I think skin designers ought to leave a buzz cut on men's heads--or the hair and skin designers need to get together for men's styles since many of them are pretty short.
But, Yes, there is a demand, but I'm sure it's a tiny market compared to women's hair. Most men just pick some clothes they like and wear them constantly--i assume the same would be true of hair.
Robin Sojourner has done a great job, in my opinion, with basic men's hair. Most of them are just a better texture with some prim parts as needed. So check those out.

I would pay top nickel for man hair! I was lucky enough to find some perfect man hair that need not be modified....but I'm always looking for new hair and can never find any. either it looks like i'm wearing a mop or i'm trying to look like ricky martin. If you end up making some male hair please post here and let everyone know.

So... what styles?
11-17-2005 09:15
Thanks for the great feedback everybody - keep 'em coming! Yes, it is pretty hard to do anything too close to the skull with prims, anyone wanting really short shadow would do better with a skin tattoo or something I would think. So no back street boys, maybe a flat top - anything else? I've been playing with a rasta 'do but it looks a little girly still... feel free to IM me in game if you have an idea or a picture I can work from and maybe I can practice on you free of charge <grin>. Willing guinea pigs always welcome.

Im speaking on my boyfriends behalf but I know he cant find much for men, including clothes. But hair is the worst of it. We've been everywhere there is mens hair and usually the typical same crap. People claim up and down to be creating new mens hair but frankly.. it looks all the same. Anything new would be appericated.

I looked all around for prim hair the last few weeks. I even bought a few that were kinda-ok, sometimes by asking other players where they bought their hair.
I noticed a pattern: messy hair, windswept hair, spikes and mohawks. Everything cluttered, nothing actually combed. I imagine that's done because it's easier for technical reasons. Nevertheless, I actually have a specific request. Something that makes me look like I own a comb.
If you need a model look at every American and European businessman and politician for the last 50 years or more. Yeah, *that* style. I don't even care if it's parted on the left or the right (maybe you could sell both). In California/Nevada/southwest US it's called a 'standard cut' because it's so common. I suspect in the midwest too... not many people out thataway have curly hair. I know that barbers up north in Washington and such don't call it that... but I'm sure you'd recognize it.
I've done enough shopping to notice several other market opportunities too... skins, shapes, and more. Really obvious stuff that was probably done to death two years ago, but those people since quit SL. But I'll save that advice for another day.

I'd definitely like to see more men's hair. After trying without much luck to make my hair as short as it is in RL, I've resigned to having it long, with a moustache and red eyes so I look like Vlad. This works much better for the time being because with short hair, I looked like something akin to Earl's second cousin thrice removed, or that redneck uncle that nobody talks about.

My RL hair is short under a quarter inch on all surfaces, I would also happily wear a high and tight. My game hair looks like my brothers RL hair but since I always wear a hat I'm used to it.

short men's hair
11-21-2005 13:03
Yes I have seen a few shorter men's styles but you are right -- there aren't many out there and the truth is that the shorter you go, the more difficult it is to do with prims.
Possibly something with a combined head texture and small prim attachments. I will keep at it. Keep those suggestions coming!

Yes, There is definately a need for men's hair. short and long hair preferrebly. If you start up the biz, I'll be sure and be there ASAP to check out your works. I make custom tats, and it seems to be a dwindling biz right now...sorry just rambling But yes, definatle there is a need for men's hair as "good" men's hair is almost non existant in SL right now.

I've got small spikes using the SL hair thingy now.. But it looks, well, fake.. If that was done using prims, w00t!
