Hello

Something about my previous experience with Photoshop cs2

I' ve been making clothers now for a while since English is not my primary language it gave me another heavy time to learn it. (excuse my grammar plz :)

I' ve allready added some clothers to SL some of them looked like bought from store but it was a lot of work. Friends suggested me to open a store but i have not enough clothers to run one atm.

Also every time i m sitting in front of Photoshop while a good designer (like many in this forum) needs 10 min to create something great i often end up spending 4 hours and more for only one piece not knowing how it will look later in SL.

Not sure if its worth to open a store or run on vendors since there are so many stores in sl allready.

FIRST QUESTION

I had few questions about the following

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/4782/effx1nu2.png

On this picture you see the white effects on the black creator made it look like leather.

I also tried my own stuff and some appeared not bad. But it was a lot of work.
Cutting a pure black outfit is not a problem but the effect is for me.

How did he do that? Did he use a certain trick in Photoshop to add an effect like this?

I was trying it with "brush tool" "gradient tool" not verry successfull

for #1 - Gaussian blur. I make a transparent layer, draw on it in my highlight color, then use Gaussian blur on the layer. I'm a GIMP user, the PS process may be different.

That works in PS as well Storm.
-Add layer
-(Optional) Blending to overlay, soft light or screen
-Paint brush: very soft (probably in white paint if you're going over a black back ground)
-Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur

The trick is many layers starting with a very high dose of Gaussian blur down to very little blur.

Also try using the Smudge tool and pull the edges of the highlights out prior to blurring.

Best,

On making the uniform: This photogrpah is a pretty good one to use as the starting point for your texture. I would do the following:

Adjust levels, brightness contrast perhaps increase the saturation to get a photo with nicer more vivid colors.

Paste into Chip Midnight's template.

Use transform to get it to fit into the front torso, just the chest part, not the sleeves. The warp tool is very good for getting the collar in the right place and so on. Cut and paste the section to be warped onto a new layer. This will make it eaiser to blend the edges of the warped piece back into the main piece.

You will need to use the stamp tool to smooth out the wrinkles at the sides and extend the fabric out to the borders of the template.

Copy the front torso, flip horizontally and move the flipped copy to the back torso. (Flipping will make the side seams match better). Use your stamp tool to get rid of the details that would only be on the front.

Select a section of the back without much detail and copy and paste onto the sleeves.

Cut out the part below the belt and paste either to a skirt or pants template. The pants template piece would be used as the lower section of a jacket item. I'm guessing a skirt would work better for this one. If you use a skirt, then on the upper body template, put your belt at the line where the skirt will meet the top. There are several versions of Chip's templates so find and use the one that has this line marked on the template.

Use your stamp tool to match the edges where the front meets the back and the sleeves meet the torso.

I am experienced with making SL clothes from photographs and I would guess this one would take me 2 - 3 hours. There are many SL clothing makers that are more skilled than I, but I doubt anyone is making great clothes in ten minutes.

If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.

I agree with sylvia on time. I use PSP so for me its raster deform (same as Warp of PS) but yes.
On my Battlestar Galactica uniform, I actually took the fabric color and make it paintable and them layered on the buttons, piping, patches.

Another on the uniform there is quite a few resources on the web for the insignia, so it is very easy to reproduce in SL, That is how I made my BDM uniform. I would recommend using prims though for the collar as just painting it on does not look right
