Texture download time affected by upload name?

Out of curiosity, can anyone explain this...

I uploaded a texture using the name with which it was saved on my PC, "Watch face 2 steel". Once uploaded, this texture seems to take many minutes to download from the server and display on my viewer.

I then changed it's name on my PC to "w2" and uploaded it again. This version downloaded as promptly as any other texture.

I then edited the texture on my PC and uploaded it again, again using its native name "Watch face 2 steel", again with the same result. And again changing its name to "w2" before uploading resulted in normal download times.

This happens on both the main grid and in Aditi. And if I rename the texture "w2" back to "Watch face 2 steel" in my inventory once it has been uploaded, it continues to behave normally. And yes, I did clear my cache while puzzling over this, but to no effect.

Any ideas as to what's happening here?

I never heard of this.

At first glance I was going to attribute it to a system glitch, but it sounds like you have tested it pretty thoroughly.

Did you clear your cache after each and every upload and relog? You said you cleared your cache, but when? I don't see where a file name would effect the process. Texture size would, 24 vs 32 bit would, but I don't see where the file name would.

"Thoroughly" is far to strong a word to describe my tinkering :) I cleared my cache a couple of times, once after the first upload proved so slow to download and again after visiting Aditi and prior to relogging on the main grid.

But as the work-around was so simple and painless I didn't really bother to investigate too deeply. And as there doesn't seem to be a known issue involved I'm quite happy to not know what that was all about, and to speculate that one texture landed on an old, slow and overloaded asset server, located in Timbuktu, while the other got routed to a brand new high-speed server that my next-door-neighbours keep hidden in their attic. I'll see what happens with "Watch face 2 brass" when I get back to work tomorrow.
