How to make partial transparency?

I noticed some designers in-world make, say stripper's shorts that show the skin through them, yet you can also see a texture over them. They are like a weaved silk you'd see in real life where the skin would show through. I understand alpha now to make, say wings, but not this partial transparency...i've tried without success on my own in photohop. Help!? Thanks, soulfusion

It's basically the same thing. You make black areas in the Alpha channel of the clothing texture where you want the skin to show through; that's all.

Anything that's white in the Alpha channel will be completely opaque. Anything that's black will be completely transparent. Anything that's gray will be partially opaque, depending on the shade of gray.

I have a couple of video tutorials on my site here that might help you.

Post again, or IM me in-world, if it's still not clear. (I hope to have more specific tuts up sometime next week, or the week after that.)

Hope this helps!

To add to this; You can also play with the opacity of your fabric layer for a sheer effect.

Exactly - I have mesh fabric. It's opacity is set to about 75%, and then I also set an alpha channel to make the "holes" in the mesh fabric completely transparent. I've also created textures with reduced opacity but no alpha channel, and it works like a champ. Good luck!
