I create two white platforms and then put them at right angles so that they form an L.

I put the object I want to photograph in the L so the the floor is white and so is the background. You could make the backdrop any colour but I use white. Then zoom in and take your pic.

This is not well said, I'm still only part way thru my first cup of coffee...

To clarify the previous post, use one or more white prims (or any solid color) and set the prim(s) to fullbright, using those as a backdrop for the product. (If they are all fullbright, the seams where they meet an an angle will vanish). Rez the product and float in in front of that surface, or wear the product and use a pose ball to lock yourself in a suitable pose in front of the backdrop. You may want to set your client to have the sun at sunrise or sunset, to control light levels better. (Noon usually looks bad). Then take the product pictures, export them to your desktop PC, and use your favorite art aplication to add suitable text and/or crop and youch up as needed. Import the finished product art back to SL, and you have your advertising art.
