Advanced Alphas

Anyone know how to do advanced alpha textures, such as cloud, or mist, or underlights for a car? For example, the center would be solid green, but fades off to totally clear alpha.. I haven't seen any tutorials on it... just on how to do completly clear alphas.. is it done with mixutres of greys whites and blacks? Or more channels? Any help would be great. Thanks. :)

yes shades of grey (in the alpha channel)

white and black are full on or off, grey is somewhere between (depending on how much white or black is used to make the shade of grey)
