Can we use animated GIFs? How bout formats like AVI?

I seem to remember back in Beta we had to script an object to shift the U/V variables to produce an animated texture, is this still the case?

Thanks for your time

Hi Casanova,

I was wondering this same thing yesterday, so I did a search of the forums and found this link:

It's a tutorial for creating animated textures. I haven't gotten through the whole thing yet, but it seems pretty straightforward. I hope this is what you're looking for!

Yup, still the case. Sounds like you've been away for a while, so whatever your old name was before, welcome back. :)

One thing that might interest you if you haven't been here since way back in beta is we can stream Quicktime video onto prims now. It's great for showing movies and shows and such, as I do in my theater from time to time, but it's a little restrictive in that it's a land-based function, not really a per-object function. You can only do one stream at a time per parcel (although you can display the stream on as many objects as you'd like all at the same time), and you have to be on the parcel to see it. Also you obviousy need a server or website to stream from, and land to stream to. It's cool for what it is, but it's not practical for something you'd whip up on a whim, or for items that need to be portable. For that stuff, it's still the same framed animation you remember from before.

Is it impossible to animate texture on a piece of clothing? I assume so, because it looks like we have no direct control of how textures are mapped to avatars, but I thought I would ask.

I guess if I wanted to make an animated hat or something, I could just make an attachment, but I thought I would double-check about clothing anyway.

Unfortunately, you're right. There's no way to animate clothing. First, as you say, we have no control over the mapping, and second, avatars cannot be scripted. The best you can do is an attachment.
