I am sure there are people willing to help you out with this, be patient for replies and be sure to ask around in world.

The important thing is to be happy with how you look. Right click yourself and choose appearance. The appearance tool has some limitations, but it is pretty powerful, there are lots of small things you can change to make yourself look unique. Keep in mind a lot of the most beautiful avatars have spent hours tweaking and fine tuning to get that way.

Just play around with the tools and remember that you can always keep tweaking your appearance, you never have to be finished.

Another thing you can do is to google for 'figure art' websites that go over the basics on getting the body proportions to look reasonably realistic.

EG: length of torso to legs and arms in relation to the size of the head...

Also, you can search for information on the 'golden ratio' as it relates to beauty.

Here's a few examples to get you started:

I have started creating some but decided to work on male ones so I have 3 or 4 with clothes & hair included you can take your pick and maybe go into the appearance mode of them and you can play around with them from there...at least you will have a starting point.

Just IM me in world & I'll send you a Land Mark so you can chose which you like

It's pretty much a given that a "skin" goes in hand with "prettier avatars", or at least more customized ones, Mahogony. A skin is just what it sounds like, and on female forms, often includes luxurious makeup and softer-appearing skin.

I defer to cliches and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so if you could please provide examples -- pictures, even! -- of avs you consider beautiful, that would help give an idea of what you are after. :)

I beg to differ on this point :) and I have a hard time recommending skins to newer folks as it is, being that the price tag is so very high. But to each is own.

Hi Mahogany :)
One of the things I love to do here in Second Life is to create avatars. Avatars that have their own personality and look very individual in the facial features.

I would love to help you learn how you can do this in the appearance mode as has already been suggested. Customizing and going more luxurious ie getting into skins and/or makeup is of course entirely up to you.

But you CAN look absolutely beautiful, pretty and perfectly fine with using the tools at your fingertips.

Look for my IM inworld and you are welcome to a one on one workshop on avatar tweaking from me. :)

Here's a really nice skin freebe I use (I also have a full skin from this vendor). There's no guarnatee it will work for you, but it's well worth checking out.

/invalid_link.html

Basicaly, it replaces a small .tga file on your harddrive.

When you next go into 'appearances' you'll see it. Make a change (any change) to the skin layer and save it. It gets uploaded to the server side at that point and everyone else can see the new look then.

because it's an underlayer stored on your local harddrive, it does not affect the standard sliders for skin colors, etc... It just makes the basic features of the av look much better than the default look.

NOTE: you will need to reinstall this file after each version update. When any new version is released it will overwrite the replacement file with the default one. The file is in the SL installation directory under 'character' The file is named head<something or other>.tga I made a copy that I edited slightly to suit myself and simply drop my copy back in the directory after each version update.

I think the most noticeable improvement is to the way the ears look.

I posted a picture in the thread showing an av with the exact same settings except just the underlayer added so you can see exactly what it does.
