Ok so I attempted to make a life-sized cutout of myself to display my clothing. But when I use 256 or 512 textures I come out looking pretty chunky.

I have seen folks have these on display and they aren't fat.

Any advice?

Your problem is that the image is stretching to fill up the square. Just scale the prim down sideways.

aye if your taller than you are wide you need to make a rectangle

i usually just make a prim next to me and streach it out to about my av size .. then ajust from there

Suppose you take you picture and you crop it to , say 300 pixels across and 600 pixels tall.

600 is twice 300, so when you apply it in SL, the face with the texture needs to be twice as tall as it is wide in order for the picture to be in correct proportion.

It could be 1 across and 2 tall, or 2 across and 4 tall.

With the picture on the prim and the prim the right proportions, press control shift to size the object, and use the white handles in order to keep the proportions the same. Adjust the size till it is life size. Then use a colored sizing handle to make the picture the right thickness. (dept)

OR...

apply the texture, stretch the prim upward and downward till the image is the right height, then enter a value in the size field for x or y, whichever one it is, that in this case would be half the object's height.

And for fun and games... get your pic looking right. Note the aspect ratio then (pixels long: pixels wide). THEN resize to your powers of 2 numbers. If your photo looks great at 3:2 you'll still want to resize to something else (possibly 1:1 in the upload, possibly 2:1, e.g. 256 X 256 or 256 X 128).

If you make your prim in the right ratio for the initial aspect ratio (so 3m X 2m, or 1.5 X 1) it will display the image in the right proportions for the original.

A tip I borrowed from Chosen ages ago when dealing with this... put the ratio in the name of the texture so it's easy to find later!
