Hi. I have a greyscale image of a cross on a white background. I am using GIMP and I need a quick and easy way to get all the white out of the image and put the cross on top of a transparent layer.

I need help! Any would be appreciated!!!

Thanks

I am going to go out on a limb and guss you can do the following/at least try it.

Select the layer with the cross.
Copy it and paste it as a new layer.
Addressing the new layer now - Desaturate it. (That is, make it black and white.)
Increase the contrast - up the brightness to maximize the difference between the cross and the background.
Select the cross.
Select inverse of the cross.
Delete the "non-cross" section.
You now have a mask of the cross... this can be used to select, color or otherwise manipulate the cross or non-cross section of the picture you are trying to manipulate.

While I use Photoshop as my primary graphics program, I believe the same general procedure can be done in Gimp... but it's been a while since I used it.

Good luck.

I'm no Gimp expert, so there may be a better way... but here is a 3 step process:

Under the Select command there is an option to select by color. You can control how precisely it discriminates against other colors, you might have to play with this. Click on the item you want to select. Now go to FILE/NEW and create a new canvas large enough to hold the selected item. The dialog for FILE/NEW allows you to specify the new canvas as being TRANSPARENT. Then do a paste onto that new canvas. That works for me anyway.

Open the image.
Right click on the image in your Layers dialog box.
Select Add Alpha Channel.
Select the Magic Wand tool.
Click and hold on the color you want to get rid of and slowly draw your mouse downward until everything you want gone is highlighted.
Right click on the image and select Clear.
Save your image as a .tga

An easier way to do it, if you're trying to select all the white in an image, is to use TheGIMP's "Select By Color" tool.

Or with the magic wand, use ctrl and shift while clicking to add and subtract from the current selection.

I try to avoid using the Select By Color tool. It's not as easy to control as the magic wand. With Magic Wand, I can see exactly what's being highlighted as I drag the mouse, and I can correct it as I go. With Select By Color, I find I do a lot more Undos because it selects things I don't want selected, and it also leaves a broader ring of color around the image.

I don't have the patience to teach, or even attend classes. I end up wanting to line up everyone and 3 Stooges slap them. My hat is off to those who do teach. I don't see how they do it.
