Hello,

I was just wondering. Is there anyone that could possibly help a starter wannabe clothing designer get started in the world of SL? I need a staple and until i can affoard to have things and expand, i need to start somewhere. I'm more of a person who learns by example and watching and doing, rather then reading. If someone would be willing to contact me via yahoo, or another chat program, i do have photoshop and illistrator. I have a nack for picking things up quick, but i just cannot seem to learn just by reading. Any contact will be appreciated, and you can actually pm me here, and i'll give you my contact info.

Thanks,

Grayson

Grayson! Welcome, and I hope you have a great time here.

I may be Second Life's single most inept clothing designer, so my advice is going to be very limited, but here goes: Visit this thread and pick up Chip Midnight's Photoshop layers. Use them instead of the Linden-supplied set. Chip has taken pains to color-code the matching regions for the template seams, and his work is a tremendous jump-start for less experienced designers.

(I also hope you'll do some men's clothing as you get the hang of things :D )

I'm sure some other folks will be along with helpful hints and links in short order, but I will tell you that every successful clothing designer has put in a fair amount of practice getting the clothing seams to line up.

A good place to start is to look through Nicola Escher's beginner's clothing tutorial available here http://www.spacethinkdream.com/NEscher_SecondLifeGuide_1.pdf

Also, search through the design and textures forum for other tutorials and tips. There's a lot of great information here. I think the best way to get started is to dive in and start experimenting, then when you have specific questions to ask them here. It can be a little daunting at first but you'll get the hang of it in no time. It mostly comes down to getting familiar with the templates and understanding their quirks, and having good skills with your paint program of choice.
