Texturing Sculpted Prims Help

Just wondering if there are any good tutorials on creating textures for sculpted prims?

Example, just purchased some fine sculpt maps, tables and chairs etc, all 1 prim, and I want to texture, now I can use just the regular textures I have in my inventory of wood etc, but with them being sculpties, the texture just wraps itself around the prim and I cannot see the fine details of the texture.

Another example would be a sculpted pumpkin, need to create texture so that the stem and flesh of the pumpkin are 2 seperate looking textures

I have a couple of test (unsure of the correct name) color maps, the texture with numbered squares all over it, so you see how the texture wraps around the prim, what I need is a tutorial of some sort that explains how to use this.

I have photoshop elements 6, and I am by no means a texture making genius, I usually purchase textures from fellow residents (like sculpt maps) who can do a much better job.

I would appreciate any links etc you could offer.

Thanks in advance

Nissa

Edit to add: I have found one on Mermaid diaries, any others would be appreciated as I need all the help I can get, I basically wat to make the prim and the texture look as good as it can together :D

The challenge of texturing a sculpted prim is in its unusual construction. Since the "Sculpt Map
Texture" is what creates our inworld object, it is a single surface that is wrapped in such a way as to enable this effect. Differing 3D programs may offer options that can aid you in
texturing or "painting" the sculpt map. Some of them directly onto the 3D depiction of your object.
Those "test" textures your referring to are very helpful as they show you where the texture
will be on your object. then you can use the same test texture in your graphics program
to guide you as to where you put your textures or portions of textures within that test texture. You may need to take some notes as to what numbers are where when you view
it in your 3d program with the test texture applied to your sculpt object.
I have made a couple of assumptions here, one is that you are saving your Sculpt as an
"obj. file and then loading it into a 3d program that allows you to view it as well as apply
textures to it. You should already be happy with your sculpt and have already have saved
your sculpt map as a separate and distinctly different file for upload to SL.
Saving/Exporting your sculpt as an obj. file helps you to texture it because you can then
view it in a 3d program to see how a texture will lie on it.

One thing to keep in mind for sculpties as well as most other things in 3D, there is always
various ways to do things depending on which programs you are using.

I got these from searching yahoo with "texturing sculpted prims".
You can find more with your own search or by searching these forums. :)

The ones below deal directly with texturing the surface of a Sculpted prim.

thanks. I have not used a 3D program as I do not create my sculpt maps, I purchase them from Sculpt map makers!! So thats my first hurdle. I tried uploading the 3D wings program as shown in mermaids diaries but I kep getting an error. I shall look at the links you provided and try search also.

Thanks for the response :D

If your mostly only interested in buying them you should look for sculpties that come with
accurately applied custom textures. Although these are most often much more expensive.

But if you really want to learn how to deal with sculpties, even if it is just how to texture them
it is a good idea to commit to doing some reading and research. As this will be invaluable to
knowing what everyone is talking about. There is no single generic way of creating a sculptie
or a sculptie texture. They all vary from one program to another.

if you want to focus on just texturing the sculptie there are a few tools you can aquire either free or inexpensively.
The ability to view the sculptie "object" as opposed to the sculptie inworld is almost a requirement. "Almost" because you could just repeatedly try it inworld. For me anyway this method is a pain in the butt as I need to log out to get the most out of the other programs
I would have open during a process like this.

One great free program for viewing and rendering imported objects which also has the ability to apply textures and other maps is DAZ Studio

http://www.daz3d.com/i/software/studio?_m=d

Cel Edman's Sculptypaint, can import and save a sculpt map as an object which may come in extremely handy for your goal. You can also preview and create sculpties in that one.

Good Luck :)
