Free textures, give'n'take

Posted this on classified earlier but I don't think it's possible to respond there.

Anyway. I did this little project of mine to really learn about how scripting and creating works in SL. It ended up in this project:

THE FAIR SHARE FAIR - WALL PAPER WALL

It's a non-profit project where anyone can click and pick textures. And if anyone wanna share, just drop on the wall. So, give'n'take or just take.

The whole project demands 116 prims excatly, so it should fit on any first land. That was one of my goals. It display 192 textures randomly. Rotating 3.2 pictures every 1 second. So the whole wall is "replaced" within 2 minutes. Kinda cool really. It's almost an art-project :)

I'd appreciate some feeback on this, good and/or bad. The wall can be found here:

Have fun!

[EDIT]
Or whole wall replaced in 1 minute, or 1.5, gah. Did so many tweaks in the end I don't know the exact figure any more. Anyway, I've put a lot of effort in making it low-laggy. Approaching 192 textures might give some slowdown but when you're catching up with all textures the random changes per second shouldn't be any problem (hopefully).

Please let me know if I'm wrong!

I stared and stared! :D
No only is this ART, this is FUNCTIONAL ART!

I was mesmerized by the textures flipping by...

And I saw several that i grabbed for a project I'm doing...And got a couple of ideas for something else.

====================================
I think this has great potential as a texture sorter.
Imagine if all of us in SL 'tagged' their textures by dropping them on the wall.
(/me drops his custom blue brick texture into the 'BRICK' wall segment and the 'BLUE' segment.)
We'd quickly have a way of searching for the textures we needed.

I'd pay $lindens to be able to use this.
I'd Rez a section of the WallPaper Wall devoted to what I need at the moment. "Brick", for example. And maybe down the road, Version 2 could allow 'BRICK' AND 'BLUE'. :-)

====================================
Great Concept, Woopsy!

Thx a lot Sterling!

Been around a while to see what people say and it's amazing how willingly people are to share what they have. There's hope for mankind :)

Having a little issue ATM as adding textures doesn't work. But you can still preview and take whatever you want. If you have something to share urgently, give it directly to me, and Ill add it, but if you wait a day or two... use the wall.

As a side note, Textures must be added to the headers, not the texture boxes.

I do like Sterlings ideas. Would be great to use the wall as a resource for textures without being forced to carry them in inventory all the time. I will however never consider to charge for anything that is free. So this wall will always stay non-profit.

Also got some feeback on switching categories so I don't have to setup more and more walls for new categories. But some things aren't really possible because of how scripting is designed. I'll think about some smart way of doing it. Feedback appreciated!

A major issue here is that you can't give away textures by it's ID (key). The given texture must be contained within the prim itself.

P.s.

Please use the Vote-Terminal to give me some kind of feedback if you were there :)
Donations not available but if you're thrilled about the idea and want to spare some land for yet another wall (more categories), gimme a call.

Cheers!

Awesome project, but the 16m signage that you're using to promote it is so ugly it looks like sign griefing. The one in my home sim, for instance, was immediately boxed in by surrounding owners, and I have to say that I'm grateful.

I know you don't have time to design a sign that reflects the aesthetic ideals of the project, but pretty much anything would be better. I'm no graphic artist, but how about throwing it open to suggestions? Or take a snapshot of the wall and use that for signage texture? I think that's what I'd do in your shoes...well, just a thought.

Woopsie,
I like this wall VERY much!
I'm curious about Foo's esthetics comments. Watch for me inworld. We'll talk, and maybe test script lag.
But subject to clarification, I might donate some land for awhile, if you'd like to setup at another location.

===EDIT:
I went to the wall again and WOW! The new sign is... *ahem*... 'new', and, uh, ...'large'!
hehehe

I'll consider removing them for now, until I can come up with something better. The ad-spaces were ment for something else anyway. Don't wanna make people go sick about'em ;)

Basically I don't, unless someone tells me they are.

I assume that if anyone finds copyrighted content on the wall, they will report that to me. As I see it, it's everyone's responsibility to make sure that content they share are not copyrighted.

However, I think it would be possible to block content by creator. So if anyone find textures that they made, and don't want to share, it could probably be blocked. If you have these concerns, please let me know.

Think that's all I can do. Any other ideas? In worse case scenario I'll just shut it down.

Woopsy,
I've taken a few folks to see the wall.
All are impressed!
And they had a couple of additional uses!
I'll send you an IM next time in world :-)

Cool! :) I still have some tweeks to do, haven't had the time lately. But it seems to work pretty well anyway.
