Texture uploads losing sharpness?

I have uploaded a gazillion textures over the last couple of months. It seem that over the past few days, the uploaded texture is blurrier than what I see in photoshop. Details are getting lost. Has this changed or did I only just notice it?

Well, that preview image is only that... a preview, and not the final image.

What resolution, in pixels each direction, is the original file? If it's anything other than 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 or 1024, then SL is resizing it for you, and does a notirously poor job on the resizing. Also, make sure you're saving as a 32-bit .tga file (24 bit .tga if you don't have transparency). If you save from jpeg, you'll not get as good an image either.

Thanks, Ceera you got it on the nose. I've done a gazillion uploads in the last couple of months. For this one I FORGOT to size it in photoshop. D'oh!

Glad I could help!

Now, if only we had a way to specify next-owner file permissions other than "no copy/no mod/yes transfer" on incoming imported textures, as a default for a bulk-uploaded batch. It's a royal pain to upload 50+ textures, and then have to manually set the permissions on each one so they are the least bit useful for the next owner!

I'd submit a feature request, but it's clear that LL isn't paying much attention at all to that function.

I was gonna say, looks like SL is resizing it. Your image in photoshop is clearly not square, it's too tall.

Ceera, you probably know that trick already, but your permissions problem reminded me of this:
You can select multiple items in your inventory, right-click and select properties. Now you have a window with tabs for the individual items, where you can set the perms. It's still very tedious, but less than having to select, right-click and change the permissions of every single item.

But yes, I'd also like a "default perms" setting for batch uploads.

Two things are happening. 1) Your TGA file is compressed to become a JPG file. 2) The preview image is re-sized. It's smaller than the actual file. Because of the latter, you can't judge the effect of the former. On the plus side, if you must release textures with full perms, screen capture will not provide anyone a perfect copy to modify and re-sell.

To clarify: If you start with an image that does not have powers-of-two sizes (e.g. 32, 64, 128, 256, etc) SL will re-size it so that it does. This looks to be the case for your photoshop image, but that's probably just that the entire width isn't showing. It's actually square, is it not?

Yes, this is what I do now. You still have to do each texture, but at least they are all together in one dialog, and the checkboxes remain in preciesly the same place.

But as a texture artist, it's not at all uncommon for me to upload 50 or more new textures at once. It gets pretty tedious, even with the trick above, to manually check two checkboxes and then close that texture's permissions tab, and repeat for all 50 textures.
