I am new to game, slowly getting the jist of it all... I am looking to make a cloak with a hood, to wear over the head and to wear off trailing down the back. Can someone please guide me to where I can begin in this endeavour. I use photoshop. I was thinking I need a template of a coat and to work from there. Yet I cannot find a template to a coat, only tops and pants, skins, etc, just to start me off.
I saw a post where someone was asking for a jedi robe, I would be very much interested in learning how to get the hood attached to the top.
Please and Thank you

You might find hunting through the building forum more helpful than this one.
Cloaks and hoods are prim objects, not clothing items in the SL sense. SL clothes (except skirts) are painted straight on to the skin in effect. Skirts are the only thing that have a non-skin mesh, which is why you can stick your legs through your skirts in some cases.
Every cloak I've seen is prim (or several), same for a hood, unless it's a skin-tight one which is not what you're after I'm thinking (skin tight hoods are actually skins, since there's no "face" clothing layer still.

So when are we going to get them to create a mesh so we don't have to prim them? If they can do skirts why not hoods?

Making a cape

You can make a cape by the following basic steps: 1. Create a block 2. Flatten the block so it like a board 3. Use flexible path to make it flexible 4. Attach it to your spine 5. Adjust the position so that it fits right.
If you want more detail, I have screen shots of how I did this on my blog secondlifehowto.com.
