I'd like to put a word on both sleeves of a shirt, is there anyway that it can be done without having one of the sleeves mirrored?

No. Well ... yes actually You could design half the shirt as a t-shirt, and the other half as a shirt. The user would have to wear both. For the half that gets mirrored when SL bakes your avie textures, you would have to perform your own mirroring in PS/PSP so that SL essentially un-mirrors it when it renders your avatar. Does that make any sense?

That still doesn't work. There is no way to alpha-mask out only one sleeve, because the texture template only HAS one sleeve. SL uses the same part of the template to produce both. Asymmetry in sleves is not possible.
Sorry.
The closest thing you could do would be to make an 'applique patch' as a prim, and wear that on the surface of one sleve, as an attachment. The text goes on that prim, and not on the sleeve. The prim could be transparent for its background, so only the text shows. You may have problems though with parts of the text ending up beneath the surface of the sleeve, however, when you move, much as some bracelets and arm bands do. Could be hard to adjust right.

Oh you are absolutely right. And my answer sounded so good. At first. When I was thinking of it. Oh. Nevermind. Pooh.

Don't feel bad, Persephone. You're not the first one to mistakenly make that suggestion as a work-around for asymetrical sleeves. I've seen experienced clothing designers say it too, before they realized there was no way to implement that.
