I use ps and I am trying to find out if there is a way to make an object shiny? Or atleast appear somewhat shiny. Thanks.

A short and simple way to make a thing shiny is to try the "low" "med "high" shine settings in game, it will NOT reflect, but it will produce a free shine. In PS there are endless ways of making something appear shiny, anything from Gradients to Bevels, to try these out double click on the layer, it will bring up a window called "Blending Properties" click either "Gradients" or "Bevel and Emboss" play around with the different sliders and styles until you find something that fits your fancy.
Those are a couple of quick and painless ways to do it.

Which brings up something I've always wondered about... it'd be nice if there was a way to create a properly reflective object.. A mirror for example... I assume there is no way, but why not?

I assume there is no way, but why not? Its the computational problems that would come from creating a reflective texture. You think you get lag now? Imagine how bad that lag would be if, instead of just loading a texture on a surface and drawing it, the client had to scan the nearby objects, do the math to figure out the angles between object, surface, and viewer, and then dynamically "draw" that surface. I don't see reflective surfaces coming to SL anytime soon. - Ace
