Hey everyone , I am now using Photoshop CS4 Extended and I am trying to make a skin. I downloaded Robin's 3D avatar template and I have that loaded up in Photoshop but I wanted to know how can I apply my individual skin textures on to the avatar so that I can draw on them in the 3D mode but also switch back to 2D mode to continue drawing on them there? Thanks for all your help

Double click in the material layers to open them up as temporary PSB files. Then just paste your skin layers into them. Depending on your system, you'll either see the changes immediately or you'll see them update after you hit Save.
One word of caution. The 3D paint engine requires a lot of RAM. If you've got less than 4GB usable on your system, make sure to save VERY often. With too little RAM, sooner or later you'll reach a point where your changes might refuse to stick. At that point, the only recourse is to close the image, and re-open it. If you haven't saved in a while, that can really suck. Get in the habit of hitting ctrl-S after every single important change.
