You'll have a very hard timing getting photos to blend with SL's default skin. It's way more saturated in color than human skin. Your best bet is to use an alpha channel on your head texture so it blends into the underlying skin color and fades out completely before the neck seam.

Photoshop's Hue/Saturation dialog is a great place to start. It is quite intuitive and easy to use. (as opposed to the levels or curves dialogs etc which the pros often use).

Learn how to use Photoshops adjustment layers, rather than editing the image directly. Easier to adjust your changes afterwards. (Layer | Add adjustment layer | Hue/Saturaion)

Also, consider uploading upper and lower full body tattoos (skins) with the same skin colour that you use for the face. This will giver you the closest colour match.
